The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) through the office of General Officer Commanding Reserve Forces (GOCRF) will conduct a four-day countrywide call of 2,752 retired UPDF veteran soldiers for an operation in Somalia.

The GOCRF Commander Lt Gen Charles Awany Otema has said that the call targets only retired UPDF veterans from the rank of Major and below.

“This call targets only honourably discharged/ retired UPDF veterans from the rank of Major and below. They should be aged 55 years and below with no criminal record and in possession of their original national IDs,” Otema told journalists in Kampala on Wednesday.

It is not the first time UPDF is calling retried officers. In 2012, reservists were called upon to form a Battle Group Nine Plus (BG 9+) that fought and captured the northern axis of Mogadishu from Masillah to 115 kilometres at Jowhwar.

Asked why the UPDF has not considered taking the recent recruits, Otema said veterans are used with the situation of fighting in Somalia.

“We normally use seasoned people. For these veterans, the bullet is not an issue,” he said.

He however added that sometimes, they are integrated with recent recruits.

Otema also dismissed claims that the situation is worsening in the Horn of African country hence the recalling of retired UPDF veterans.

“There is nothing bad. They are going there for reinforcement. Reserves have been there before. Why don’t they go and earn a thousand dollars instead of taking a peanut here?” he said
