Somali national Army (SNA) on Thursday killed nine al-Shabab fighters in a fierce fight in Lower Shabelle region, a military officer confirmed.
Abdi Hamid Mohamed Dirir, commander of Somali infantry division, told reporters that al-Shabab militants launched an attack on a military base in Awdhigle town, but the soldiers repulsed them.
“Our forces are always on alert for any attempt from the militants, hence, they foiled their engagement on the army base in the town.
The army killed nine al-Shabab militants during the fierce fight between the army and the attackers,” Dirir said, adding that the army also recovered ammunitions from the militants.
The latest incident came barely two days after government forces killed six al-Shabab militants in clashes in Qoryoley town in the same region.
Southern regions of Somalia have become the battleground of clashes between the government army and al-Shabab extremists after the militants were chased from the capital in August 2011 by Somali army and African Union forces.
