World champion Sifan Hassan has broken the 10,000m European record set by Britain's Paula Radcliffe 18 years ago.
At an athletics meeting in Hengelo in the Netherlands, the 27-year-old Dutchwoman who was born in Ethiopia, won the race in 29:36.67 seconds. She ran alone for almost half of the 25 laps.
Hassan ended up almost 25 secs below the old European record set by former marathon world record holder Radcliffe at the 2002 European Championships in Munich (30:01.09).
This makes her the fourth fastest woman at this distance.
The world record is held by the Ethiopian Almaz Ayana in 29:17.45, following her Olympic victory in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
